TSLA covered-call plan

Task LEDGER-TSLA-CC · prepared Oct 21, 2026 (JST), revised the same day after an adversarial review using market data as of the Oct 20 US close · report only, not a trade instruction

Labels: VERIFIED read from a data connector or exchange quote · CALCULATED computed by us · ASSUMPTION a model input we chose · NEWSLETTER from Kevin's newsletter and broker emails, not verified

The short version
  1. Don't sell any new calls before tonight's earnings. Tesla reports Wed Oct 21 after the close (4:00 PM ET, 5:00 AM JST Thu Oct 22). VERIFIED The first new sale comes after the report, once you've seen real post-report prices.
  2. Choose ONE account for the lot you'll let go, and settle the existing Oct 30 $400 call first. That call sits on a taxable lot and spans the report. If the IRA lot is the one to sell, buy the Oct 30 call back. Otherwise two lots could go. If the taxable lot is the one to sell, let the Oct 30 call ride, and open no IRA call.
  3. If the sale must happen, calls can't promise it. The only sure way is to sell the 100 shares outright, or sell an in-the-money call. An at-the-money-ish call (about 0.40–0.45 delta, about 30 days) gets assigned only some of the time. The option market prices roughly a 1-in-3 chance per month for the Nov 20 $390 call CALCULATED.
  4. Calls on the lots you keep always carry some chance of losing those shares. Keep it small: 0.10 delta, 30–45 days, strikes $420 or higher, at most 2–3 lots, never through earnings, and set a buyback budget in advance. If keeping every other share is a must, sell no calls on them.
  5. The Dec 18 $280 puts can sell 500 shares by themselves. If TSLA closes under $280 on Dec 18, they get exercised automatically and 500 shares are sold. Before expiry, decide whether to sell them or give a do-not-exercise instruction.
  6. Backtest, 2015–2026, model-priced, revised: holding TSLA returned 31.6%/yr. Every covered-call version trailed it, by 1.8–12.3 points a year (2.8–7.6 for the simple hold-to-expiry versions). Drawdowns were smaller: −59% to −72%, against −74% for holding. Skipping earnings did not reliably help returns; it depended on the period. It's in the plan to limit gap and assignment risk, not to add return. Covered calls came out ahead only if option prices ran about 25% or more above realized volatility.

Recent call history in the taxable account VERIFIED:

At the Oct 20 close, that call was quoted $5.40 bid / $5.50 ask (Cboe delayed). Buying it back at the ask would lock in about $775 (≈58.5%) before fees. That's an unrealized gain at a stale quote, not money kept. At TSLA $450, the call would owe at least $5,000.

Total TSLA exposure is bigger than the share count. Using Cboe deltas from Oct 20, the long calls add about 388 share-equivalents. Net of the puts and the short call, total exposure is about 1,261 share-equivalents against 925.69 actual shares. The IRA alone is about 304, so selling 100 IRA shares leaves about 204 there CALCULATED. Selling one lot trims concentration only a little. The $280 puts pay off only below $280, through Dec 18, on 500 shares. On those 500 shares, that leaves about $46,900 of decline from today's price to $280 before they help.

4. The rules

A. Before every sale

B. The one lot you want to let go

StepWhat
1. Pick the accountTraditional IRA: no tax when it sells, and the cash stays in the IRA to rebalance. It does shrink the IRA's TSLA to about 69 shares plus the two $350 calls. Taxable: creates a taxable gain, and lot choice matters. The 401(k) only if the plan allows options. Pick one.
2. Settle the Oct 30 callIRA chosen → buy back the Oct 30 $400 call (before tonight's close if you want no earnings exposure). Taxable chosen → the Oct 30 call can be the disposal call. Open no IRA call while it's live.
3a. Sure waySell 100 shares (limit order) on a day you like the price. Or sell an in-the-money call, which collects more premium and is very likely to be assigned.
3b. Call way (not guaranteed)After the report, sell 1 call at about 0.40–0.45 delta, about 30 days out (Nov 20), at a strike you're happy to sell at. Pre-report, the Nov 20 $390 was about 0.41 delta and $13.35 bid. The market-implied chance it finishes in the money is about 36% CALCULATED. That's a model figure, not a forecast. If it isn't assigned, repeat for Dec 18, then Jan 15 (before Q4 earnings), at or above your minimum price. Don't promise yourself a date. If the deadline matters, switch to 3a.
4. After assignmentStop. Don't open another disposal call. Never roll the disposal call up.

C. The lots you keep (taxable, plus the 401(k) if allowed)

D. The long puts and long calls

Tax flags (not tax advice). Get a tax professional to review a dated lot-by-lot schedule before acting in the taxable account.

Premium and Net option P&L are each cycle's dollars divided by the portfolio value at that cycle's start, summed per year. Net = premium minus what was paid at expiry or buyback. They're not additive to CAGR. "ITM at expiry" counts only calls held to expiry; early buybacks are excluded.
